Class Plan: What's you name?

Introduction: 
This one hour class is part of the spoken English class for Grade 3 primary school students in Shanghai Bilingual International School, Shanghai, China.

Identification:
Language: 50% English +50% Chinese

Objectives: -->

Teach the students the sentence structure: What is your/his/her name?

Explain the difference among: I, my, you, your, he, his, she, and her.

Teach the students the sentence structure: My/His/Her name is XX.

Let the students know each others’ names


 
Methodology

All lectures are held in a classroom where high speed Internet, a projector, and wide free space are provided.

 Activities:

1.   (5 mins) Video playing:

Play the video “What’s your name?”   (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv1JkBL5728)

Explain the meaning of "What's your/his/her name?" and "My name is XX" in Mandarin.

 

2.   (5 mins) Name drawing:

Draw their own names on the paper plates.

3.   (5 mins) Demo:

Pick 3-4 students and practice the following conversations (shown on the projector screen) with each of them shown in front the class.

A: Hello! My name is Cai. What’s your name?

B: Hello, Cai. My name is Peter.

A: Hello, everyone! His name is Peter.

4.   (3 mins) Pair-ups:

Pair up two students and let them practice the same conversations.

5.   (15 mins) Compulsory performance:

Let each pair stand up and have the conversation in front of the class. They are encouraged to go onto the stage.

6.   (10 mins) Reinforcement:

Play the video again and use the characters in the video to ask the students questions. For example, pause the video after Peter introduced himself and I can ask the students “What’s her/his name?” by pointing Peter.
